The Detailed Itinerary
1. Angkor Wat Sunrise (The Icon)
Start your day at the edge of the lily ponds to witness the sun rising behind the five lotus towers of Angkor Wat. This is the most iconic photograph in Asia and the perfect introduction to the scale of the empire.
2. Angkor Wat Inner Gallery
After sunrise, enter the main temple before the midday heat. Your guide will walk you through the Gallery of Bas-Reliefs, detailing the epic "Churning of the Sea of Milk" and the history of King Suryavarman II.
3. South Gate of Angkor Thom
Cross the massive moat into the Royal City via the South Gate. You’ll stop to admire the 108 statues of Devas (gods) and Asuras (demons) lining the bridge, engaged in a cosmic tug-of-war.
4. Bayon Temple (The Temple of Faces)
Located at the exact center of Angkor Thom, Bayon is famous for its 54 gothic towers decorated with over 200 serene, smiling stone faces of Avalokiteshvara.
5. Baphuon Temple
A short walk from Bayon leads you to the "Golden Mountain," a massive 11th-century temple mountain featuring a giant, 9-meter-long reclining Buddha hidden within its western wall.
6. Phimeanakas & Royal Palace
Walk through the shaded forest of the former Royal Palace grounds to see Phimeanakas, a sandstone pyramid where, according to legend, the King met with a serpent-queen every night.
7. Terrace of the Elephants & Leper King
Explore the 350-meter-long Terrace of the Elephants, once used as a giant viewing stand for public ceremonies, followed by the Terrace of the Leper King, featuring exceptionally preserved, deep-cut carvings of underworld deities.
8. Ta Keo (The Unfinished Mountain)
A brief stop at this "Mountain with Peaks of Gold." It is unique because it was struck by lightning during construction, leading the ancients to leave its massive sandstone blocks largely uncarved.
9. Ta Prohm (The Jungle Temple)
Famously featured in Tomb Raider, Ta Prohm has been left to the elements. Giant silk-cotton trees and strangler figs grow directly out of the ruins, their roots "swallowing" the ancient stone walls.
10. Banteay Kdei & Srah Srang
End your day at Banteay Kdei, a quiet "Citadel of Chambers" that offers a peaceful escape from the crowds. Across the road, take a final moment to reflect at Srah Srang, the royal reservoir once used for ritual bathing.
